Burning CDs almost seems a thing of the past – a bit like making a mix tape for your girlfriend! But creating backups of your favorite CDs or DVDs can mean the difference between a 10-year lifespan and 10 months, especially if you’re sharing with family members or friends. Alcohol 120% is a powerful tool available on special for less than a dollar, making it a worthwhile investment when you consider the average cost of a DVD. Alcohol 120% can also facilitate the storage of important information, enabling you to extract the images from the disc and store them on your computer or hard drive. Like most burning software, Alcohol 120% focusses on the extraction and creation of ISO files. These are basically single files that contain all the information contained on a disc. Once you have saved the ISO file on your computer, you can use it to create as many copies as you desire. Alcohol 120% facilitates this storage facility by providing 31 virtual drives on which to save your CD or DVD images.
Although not the easiest software to familiarise yourself with, Alcohol 120% is powerful and fast, taking just a few minutes to burn an original data CD. However, if you are looking to compose an original data file, you will need to use the Xtra wizard, followed by the Burning wizard which isn’t as straightforward as some of its rivals. Nevertheless, Alcohol 120% does make copying a pre-existing disc as simple as learning the alphabet, although its Copy wizard doesn’t not have the decryption algorithms required to copy commercial DVD’s – something that undoubtedly delights movie makers across the globe! In addition to supporting many image file extensions, Alcohol 120% now includes Smart File Advisor which can distinguish the file type even if there is no extension and no software installed to open them. This function enables you to identify the file type and then open it accordingly. Basically, Alcohol 120% gives you lots of power at a low price but novices beware – this isn’t the easiest software to navigate and the learning curve is pretty steep if you’re just starting out. Nevertheless, once you have the ISO file, you can burn as many discs as you wish, enabling you to share your favourite music, movies and games with your friends and family, or even your whole neighbourhood!
